TOWER ON SHORT
SECOND YEAR STUDIO FALL 2017 8 WEEKS PROFESSOR BRENT STURGLAUGSON
The primary design intention of the Tower on Short is to create an architectural icon in downtown Lexington, utilizing a mass timber structure for its 20 stories. The façade incorporates phenolic panels that are reminiscent of wood and local limestone, allowing the tower to stand out within the surrounding cityscape. The tower is oriented in accordance with the cardinal directions on the site. This design move seeks to break up the monotony of the surroundings buildings, which which adhere to the existing downtown grid. A central concept behind the design is the duality of private and public spaces. The form and procession of the tower highlight the public areas at the top and bottom. These spaces foster community and social interaction, featuring a lobby and lounge at the base, and a fitness center, restaurant, and nightclub at the top. The top floors, offering panoramic views of downtown, the University of Kentucky campus, and surrounding landmarks, serve as major attractions, drawing visitors to experience the city from new heights. The middle section of the tower is exclusively dedicated to private residential spaces, targeting individuals and small families. It includes studios, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom units, each equipped with private balconies. Additionally, shared spaces on each floor promote a sense of community among residents. This apartment tower thoughtfully balances public and private functions, addressing the need for social interaction and private retreat, and striving to meet both needs through its innovative design.
