BRONX RIVER MARKET
THIRD YEAR STUDIO FALL 2018 4 WEEKS PROFESSOR GREG LUHAN
The Bronx River Market is designed to revitalize the existing foodway, support local businesses, and inspire healthy lifestyles. Embedded within Concrete Plant Park, the market facilitates the growth, distribution, and sale of nutritious food, creating a vibrant hub for community engagement. Complementing the market, the mixed use development features housing, a restaurant, and several green spaces integrated throughout the building. The building’s stepped form maximizes sunlight exposure to green spaces and offers optimal views for residents. The housing space caters to diverse community needs, offering four unit types: 1-BR, 2-BR, 3-BR, and 4-BR configurations. These units are arranged in a Tetris-style layout, ensuring each has an outward view. The market spans the lower levels. The ground floor accommodates up to 62 vendors with 12’ by 12’ stalls, with the option to occupy multiple stalls. Public access to the market is promoted through multiple entry points. The second level offers seating areas for people to enjoy the fresh food. Lastly, the multi-level community growing spaces at the circulation zone allow people to appreciate the hard work put into the garden. The surrounding site features natural spaces for both residents and visitors, enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of the Concrete Plant Park Market. This project aims to create a sustainable, community-focused environment.
